In October 2014 it became apparent that Disney had plans to remove Luigi’s Flying Tires. The original Cars Land attraction featured giant inflatable tires which rode on a large cushion of air. Riders would then lean in the direction they wanted to go in an attempt to bounce off of each other. After low customer performance ratings and a series of safety concerns, Disney made the move to replace the attraction.
Over the past 13 months Walt Disney Imagineering has been converting the Cars Land attraction into a new trackless ride system of dancing cars. The peculiarly named replacement, Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters is set to open at Disney California Adventure on March 7, 2016.
Disney provides the following description of Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters:
In this all-new attraction, Luigi will turn the tire storage yard behind his Casa Della Tires into a dance floor! Cars Land guests will be able to ride along with Luigi’s cousins as they move and spin to upbeat Italian music, performing the traditional dances of their hometown village.
Each dancing car will have its own high-spirited personality and signature dance moves – making every ride unpredictable, as you won’t know which way they will turn and spin next!
The replacement attraction will no doubt be touted as an “all new addition to Cars Land”, which to be fair is true. Although it’s important for visitors to understand this replaces an existing attraction, keeping the Cars Land attraction count at three.
Update: Disneyland has announced plans for Annual Passholder previews of Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters. They will be held March 4th prior to the official attraction opening. In order to ride, Passholders must present their valid AP at the attraction entrance between 9:00 am and 10:00 pm. There is a height restriction of 32″ for Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters. There is no need to register for the preview.
