The long rumored Marvel themed changes to the Hollywood Twilight Zone Tower of Terror attraction at Disney California Adventure park were confirmed today at the San Diego Comic-Con.
Beginning in the summer of 2017, guests will have the opportunity to join the characters from Guardans of the Galaxy in a rethemed version of the random drop ride which is currently themed to coincide with the Hollywood Land portion of California Adventure. In the announcement Disney is also promising more Marvel additions in the coming years to California Adventure. The Hollywood Land area has long been underutilized after the park revived a major makeover in 2012.
Disney provided the following description of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!’:
Deep inside his fortress-like collection, the mysterious Taneleer Tivan (aka The Collector) is displaying his newest acquisitions, the Guardians of the Galaxy. They are trapped in customized display cases, suspended over a vast abyss. Unbeknownst to their unscrupulous captor, the intrepid Rocket has escaped and is enlisting the Collector’s VIP guests for help. Guests board a gantry lift, which launches them into a chaotic and hilarious adventure as they join Rocket in an attempt to break his fellow Guardians out of captivity.
This announcement comes as Disney is radically changing the way their theme parks are developed. Beginning with Cars Land in 2012, and the currently under construction Star Wars Land, the Disneyland Resort is moving to intellectual property immersive environments as opposed to the tradional themeing we’ve come to know.
There is no opening date set for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!’ As of yet. Disney has only said that the new attraction will open in the Summer of 2017 with the Hollywood Tower of Terror closing in early 2017.
