Disneyland Photo Report for March 3, 2014

Welcome Back to the Disneyland Resort

Heavy rain moved in over the Southern California area this past week and weekend which helped drive away the larger crowds. Visiting Disneyland in the rain is one of my favorite times and it was exceptionally great to have the spring flowers and trees in bloom at the same time.

The Disneyland Resort and the Magic Kingdom park in Florida will be hosting yet another 24 hour party.  Disney officially announced the next 24-hour party over Memorial Day Weekend. From Friday, May 23 at 6:00 a.m. until Saturday, May 24 at 6:00 a.m. Disney has invited guests to dress up for a “Rock Your Disney Side” costume party and join a gathering of Disney heroes and villains for 24 hours of fun.

The latest addition from the Marvel universe, Captain America, began annual passholder previews on Saturday. The addition to Innoventions is a small one, but should draw in a sizable crowd. The addition to Space Mountain was seen covered this past week, hopefully because of the rain. It is also apparent that the heavy downpours we experienced were not able to wash away the dirt and grime from the white exterior of Space Mountain. Disneyland needs to address this problem, as it appears worse week by week.

Alice in Wonderland was closed this past weekend because of the rain, and is now scheduled to close this spring for an extensive refurbishment which will finally address the ‘temporary’ safety railings which were hastily installed in April of 2010. New Orleans Square has received some Mardi Gras decorations, Splash Mountain has reopened and much more from around the resort!

The rain showers kept the crowds at bay this past weekend. These photos were taken on Saturday!

Captain America: The Living Legend and Symbol of Courage

Captain America is the latest Marvel character to move into the upper floor of Innoventions at Disneyland. The First Avenger joins Iron Man Tech and the Thor: The Treasures of Asgard meet and greet.

Captain America fills the space that was recently occupied by Nanooze Labs, a small interactive science exhibit. The area remains very similar in size, but now contains a small queue, a timeline and a replica of Captain America’s World War II uniform.

The area is small. Smaller than Thor: Treasures of Asgard, a meet which still commands a respectable line five months after opening. Because of the small space, guests should be prepared not only for a long wait, but also for a line which will have multiple switchbacks and may even extend out of the building.

Captain America officially opens on March 7, 2014.

Refurbishment Roundup

Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage

Ever since Disneyland announced the closure of the Submarine Voyage, online rumors have been circulating that management’s true intention was to premaritally close the attraction. When the subs closed, the typical signage proclaiming a return date was missing. This helped to fuel rumors even further. Two weeks ago we showed you the appearance of subtle signs which stated that attraction would “Resurface in the Fall of 2014”, and now the construction walls have been covered in graphics proclaiming the same.

Even though this may help put some fans at ease, remember, a similar thing happened at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad last year. That attraction refurbishment was originally scheduled to end in the “Fall of 2013”, but now some 15 months after closing remains shuttered.

Dirty Space

It’s now very clear that it is going to take much more than heavy rains to clean off Space Mountain. The attraction facade has become one of the most filthy things at Disneyland, a park which prides its self on cleanliness. To be fair, Disneyland management is facing challenges due to OSHA and DOSH crackdowns following an employee injury, but the problem seems to be worse each week.

Over the past few weeks workers could be seen installing what appears to be scaffolding on the roof of Space Mountain, presumably to aid in the safe cleaning or repainting of the attraction. This past week that same scaffolding was seen covered.

Alice in Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland has finally been slated for closure to address the ‘temporary’ safety railings and tarps which were installed on the exterior elevated track portion in April 2010. This dates back to yet another OSHA visit where inspectors deemed the track too dangerous for workers, despite there being no documented incident or injury.

Disneyland announced in a blog post that Alice in Wonderland is set for closure between March 10 and the “summer of 2014” in which “minor” changes “will be made to the exterior of the attraction”.

New Orleans Square

Fat Tuesday is tomorrow, March 4th, so it seems obvious that Disneyland will not be repeating the popular New Orleans Bayou Bash for 2014. The decision could be due to the current disarray of New Orleans Square while the exclusive Club 33 expansion is taking place. Most of the central streets and east side of the area remains covered in construction walls and tarps.

Disneyland did however install some of the Mardi Gras decorations.

Rivers of America on a rainy day

“it’s a small world” remains closed through mid-April

"it's a small world"

Splash Mountain has reopened following a brief refurbishment.

Splash Mountain

During this week’s heavy rain, a large tree branch on Tom Sawyer Island split an fell partly into the Rivers of America. Guests were not on the island at the time and no injuries were reported. Disney crews made quick work of the fallen branch, having it cleaned up by the end of the day.
