Disneyland Photo Report for March 25, 2014

Welcome Back to the Disneyland Resort

Spring Break has begun and for the next 5 – 6 weeks we can expect to see increased crowd sizes and longer wait times for attractions throughout the Disneyland Resort. On the up side, the weather has been beautiful and mild and the flowers and trees are in bloom.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is now official open, and has been consistently averaging an hour wait time. Disneyland has announced the Springtime Roundup for the Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree and although the celebration doesn’t begin until this upcoming weekend, some of the decorations have already been placed throughout the ranch.

In Fantasyland Alice in Wonderland has closed and is receiving its long awaited refurbishment to address the exterior vine and finally remove the “temporary” railings which were placed around the attraction four years ago. Space Mountain‘s exterior addition appears to be nearing completion and “it’s a small world” is getting ready to celebrate 50 years!

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

‘The Wildest Ride in the Wilderness’ is now officially open and has been averaging an hour-long wait. Some of this is due to the reopening of the popular attraction following a 14 month long refurbishment. But with Spring Break crowds, every attraction has been experiencing extended wait times.

Springtime Roundup

Beginning March 28th, guests will find Big Thunder Ranch decorated with colorful flowers and special entertainment. Disney characters will make appearances along with the Easter Bunny. Disneyland has also said that “famous Disney rabbits” will also be present – hopefully this means Roger!. Guests will also have the opportunity to take part in egg art demonstrations, crafts and sample special treats.

Some very simple decorations and banners were already in place this past weekend.

‘Springtime Roundup’ at Disneyland kicks off on March 28th and runs through April 20, 2014.

Alice in Wonderland

In a pre-emptive reaction to possible OSHA citations following an incident at Space Mountain in 2010, Disneyland installed very ugly tarps and railings around the exterior vine of Alice in Wonderland. Management did so despite there being no record of any incident or injuries during the attraction’s nearly 50 year existence. The tarps and railings were installed in April of 2010 and this past week they were finally removed!

Disneyland is currently making changes to the exterior of the attraction which are said to make the vine “closer” to the building. I have no doubt that the changes will be dramatic in comparison to the open feeling guests had when descending down from the upper level of the attraction. We’ll follow the changes to Alice in Wonderland each week and keep you informed.

50th Anniversary of “it’s a small world”

“it’s a small world” is currently closed for an extended refurbishment, but the world-famous attraction is gearing up to celebrate a major milestone. It was 50 years ago that Walt Disney and WED opened the attraction at the 1964 – 65 New York World’s Fair and Disney is celebrating it in a special, musical way.

The now classic “it’s a small world”, and its famous Sherman Brothers song, debuted 50 years ago this April 10th and Disney is celebrating this milestone with a online, global sing-along at SmallWorld50.com

Space Mountain

It seems so many of our photos lately have been documenting the OSHA installations around Disneyland. Space Mountain’s ongoing exterior addition was painted white this past week. The contrast between the new white and old dirty sections is quite startling. Hopefully this means Space will be getting a wash or new paint soon.

You can view the addition in various stages in our past Disneyland Photo Reports

Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage

The Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage remains dry with very little work noticeable in the exterior lagoon. Some scaffolding has been installed at the cave entrance and around the subs at the dock.

The Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage will remain closed through the fall of 2014.

Wait Times, Closures and Spring Break

Indiana Jones Adventure is now closed through May 8th and along with another major “E-Ticket” attraction closure (Nemo) and Spring Break, guests should be prepared for longer wait times for Disneyland’s attractions. This past weekend saw wait times for the Jungle Cruise at 40 minutes, Pirates of the Caribbean at 60 minutes and Radiator Springs Racers at 100 minutes.

My advise is to arrive at the parks early and use FASTPASS. Also, take this time to experience other attractions besides the major “E-Ticket” draws. Some of my favorites include: Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, the Mark Twain Riverboat and the Main Street Vehicles.

Welcome to Disney California Adventure

While not completely immune from the Spring Break crowds, Disney California Adventure seems to be experiencing much lighter crowds than Disneyland. The exception is to Radiator Springs Racers and World of Color.

Cozy Cone Motel

A few months ago I noticed that Disney had replaced the grass at the Cozy Cone in Cars Land with fake turf. Now it seems the additives in the fountain are causing the turf to turn white. The damage to the fountain has been an ongoing problem, in fact it had just been removed and refurbished only a few weeks ago. I’m not sure what’s causing this, could be chlorine or perhaps very, very hard water deposits.

The fountain was not operational when I took these photos, it remained frozen in place. But now with the damage to the turf, this popular photo spot just behind the Lightning McQueen and Mater meet and greet location is looking quite bad.

Little Mermaid

Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure is closed through May 9th. It is rumored that the “under the sea” scene is receiving some enhancements.

Downtown Disney Starbucks

The latest Starbucks at the Disneyland Resort opened a few weeks ago in the Downtown Disney District. This is one of the nicest Starbucks I’ve seen and it was truly designed to premium store. The walls are covered with dark wood paneling, the pillars are polished concrete and the lighting is dim, warm and inviting. The store is laid out well, beginning with a queue area, drink ordering and a large open space where customers can collect their beverages and sample coffee from a high-end Clover machine.

Seating is primarily outdoors which features tables and chairs underneath a large shade tree.

Because this is a corporate owned Starbucks the benefits of Gold Card and WiFi apply.
