Welcome Back to the Disneyland Resort

Disney California Adventure celebrated the ‘Year of the Horse’ this past weekend with the ‘Happy Lunar New Year’ celebration. Guests were entertained by multi-cutural Asian performance groups, had the opportunity to meet with Disney characters and sample select Asian cuisine.

For the second time in two years a Disneyland is being used to film a movie. The sci-fi film ‘Tomorrowland‘ will be using “it’s a small world” as a filming location two days this week. Over the weekend film crews were scene setting up for the event and we have photos to share with you.

We also take a trip Around the Resort and view progress on refurbishment projects such as Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Splash Mountain, Fantasmic! and the Sailing Ship Columbia. To cap off this week’s Disneyland Photo Report, we’ll listen to some tunes from a great Beatles tribute band, ‘Hard Days Night’, as they played the Tomorrowland Terrace this past weekend.

Lunar New Year 2014 Disney California Adventure

Disney California Adventure celebrated the Lunar New Year this past weekend with a three-day event at Paradise Garden.

Guests were entertained by Chinese dragon and lion dancers and Vietnamese and Korean performers. Mickey and Minnie, Chip ‘n Dale, and Mulan and Mushu also made appearances.

The Happy Lunar New Year celebration began three years ago and has grown significantly over that time. Disney really went all out this year with the decorations and entertainment. The event drew in guests throughout the weekend and at times the waits for the character meet and greets extended back to the entrance of Goofy’s Sky School.

The event was held over the past weekend and has already concluded, which is a shame considering the work that went into it and the turnout from guests. I would love to see Disney hold these over at least a two week period.

It seems that Disneyland Management knows that holding these cultural events throughout the year are a great way to encourage Annual Passholders, and day-guests alike, to visit the Resort. The revenue generated from food, beverages and PhotoPass sales seem to be enough to justify the work and expense of holding an event such as Lunar New Year for only a three day period. Over the Holiday season ¡Viva Navidad! proved to be extremely popular, and I remain hopeful that Disney will bring back the Greek celebration OPA! for 2014 as well.

Below you’ll find a video and more photos from the 2014 Happy Lunar New Year celebration.

Several times a day a procession was held just outside of Paradise Gardens. On loan from Disneyland’s Circle D Ranch was Finn, a steed typically seen on Main Street U.S.A.

‘Tomorrowland’ Movie Filming at Disneyland

For the second time the past few years, Disneyland is hosting a Hollywood film crew for a movie shoot. Filming for Brad Bird’s ‘Tomorrowland’ will take place at “it’s a small world” this week

The Disney backed Brad Bird science fiction movie ‘Tomorrowland’ will be filming a few scenes next week at Disneyland. The filming segments will take place at the “it’s a small world” attraction. Walt Disney debuted the now world famous attraction during the 1964 / 65 New York World’s Fair. Some scenes for ‘Tomorrowland’ were also filmed at Walt Disney World’s “Carrousel of Progress”, another World’s Fair attraction.

Over the past weekend film crews have been installing various elements around the west side of “it’s a small world” at Disneyland. Coverings were placed along the entrance canal and a large blue screen was placed over most of the attraction’s facade.

Filming is expected to take place on February 4 and 5, 2014. Guests in the park should be aware that Disney will be closing several attractions and walkways during the filming. Film crews have also installed a large wall between the walkways and “it’s a small world”; the filming will be obstructed from view.

Mouseplanet has a great breakdown of which attractions and walkways will be closed and when. They include the Disneyland Railroad and the Matterhorn Bobsleds.

It’s a Dirty World After All

Last week we drew some attention to the filth that has been allowed to build on the surface of Space Mountain, but this week we noticed that Space isn’t the only attraction building being neglected.

The “it’s a small world” facade is in really bad shape. The Holiday overlay, where tens-of-thousands of LED lights are placed on the surface has really taken a toll. The facade is littered with tiny squares where the adhesive for the lights has left the surface spotted with glue and dirt. Also, the Disneyland Railroad steam trains have left the white paint and left over scrims from “The Magic, The Memories and You” projection show are now black.

To the best of my knowledge, the safety issues which are plaguing Space Mountain from a good wash down are not affecting “it’s a small world”. The popular attraction is currently closed for removal of the Holiday overlay and the filming of ‘Tomorrowland’, but is seems obvious that the facade is in desperate need of attention as well.

Refurbishment Roundup

Space Mountain

Space Mountain is currently open, but scafolding and rails have been installed around the top and base of the attraction building. We’re remaining hopefull that the newly installed “saftey” rails are to facilitate the cleaning of the filthy building surface.

The former “Kodak” picture spot signs have been replaced with “Nikon” picture spot signs. This stems from the Nikon sponsorship of Disneyland announced in 2013. Kodak was removed from the park maps and the photo stores of each park in 2013 following the camera manufacture’s bankruptcy in 2012.

‘Hard Days Night’

Disneyland has been playing host to a great Beatles Tribute band lately. “Hard Days Night” has been periodically performing at the Tomorrowland Terrace. If you have the opportunity and like the Beatles, I highly recommend catching one of their performances.

‘Hard Days Night’ is scheduled to perform again Feb 22 and March 2, 2014.
