Disneyland Photo Report for February 19, 2014

Welcome Back to the Disneyland Resort

The busy Presidents Day weekend is behind us and the crowds should subside in the latter half of the week. Over the past few Photo Updates we have been showcasing the early arrival of Spring and this week is no different. Although towards the end of the day dark clouds moved in over Disneyland, Tuesday was unseasonably warm and sunny. The flowers in trees have bloomed and tulips surround the Partners statue.

Disneyland continues to see a significant number of refurbishment closures. The Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage has been drained, and signs have been installed proclaiming a reopening timeframe. Speaking of reopening, we have some news about Big Thunder Mountain Railroad that may be exciting. Space Mountain is receiving some exterior work which appears to be altering the appearance of the classic Disneyland attraction, and we take a look at other refurbishment projects around the resort.

Making a ‘safer’ Space Mountain

Our regular readers will be familiar with this story, but for those who are not, I’ll catch you up briefly. A few years ago a worker slid down the exterior of Space Mountain and as a result was injured. Disneyland was fined for having ‘inadequate fall protection’ and since then the exterior of Space Mountain has become filthy as Disneyland Management has attempted to find a solution to the problem.

This past week saw crews move in and begin construction on what appears to be a third ‘ring’ around the top of the building. At this point the exact purpose remains a mystery, although it seems obvious that Disney may be addressing this problem. Although this will definitely alter the look of the classic Disneyland attraction, I’m remaining hopeful that Imagineers are construction an unobtrusive solution to this problem that will both look like it belongs and help keep workers safe.

Space Mountain has so far remained open during this construction, and let me again reiterate that the safety concerns were related to after-hours maintenance and not guest safety.

Captain America

Construction continues on the ‘Captain America’ meet and greet in Innoventions. It is expected to open March 7th. Also Disneyland announced Annual Passholder previews that have since filled. More Information

Refurbishment Roundup

We’ve already looked at a few refurbishment projects, here’s a look at the rest …

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad remains closed and has yet to receive an official opening date. However, this week Disneyland has begun to offer Cast Members with the opportunity to ride the attraction between March 7th and 11th. This was reported by MousePlanet as a “test and adjust” period rather than a preview. It’s also a good indicator that the attraction refurbishment may finally be nearing completion.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad closed for an originally planed 10-month refurbishment in January 2013. The attraction has now been closed for 14 months.

Tiki Juice Bar – Dole Whip

The Tiki Juice Bar, a favorite place for Disneyland guests to get their Dole Whips, has reopened following a small expansion. The bar doesn’t appear physically larger, but instead now has two machines and extra registers. This should help move the typically long lines a bit quicker.
