The Disney backed Brad Bird science fiction movie ‘Tomorrowland’ will be filming a few scenes next week at Disneyland. The filming segments will take place at the “it’s a small world” attraction. Walt Disney debuted the now world famous attraction during the 1964 / 65 New York World’s Fair. Some scenes for ‘Tomorrowland’ were also filmed at Walt Disney World’s “Carrousel of Progress”, another World’s Fair attraction.
‘Tomorrowland’ is the second movie to film scenes at Disneyland in recent years. ‘Saving Mr. Banks’ filmed a few scenes on Main Street U.S.A. and Fantasyland in late 2012.
The full plot of ‘Tomorrowland’, which stars George Clooney and Hugh Laurie, is still not fully known. Last year, Disney teased the film with an online and reality based game called ‘The Optimist’ which culminated at the 2013 D23 Expo.
The official Disney studio description of the film ‘Tomorrowland’:
“Bound by a shared destiny, a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity and a former boy-genius inventor jaded by disillusionment embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory as ‘Tomorrowland.’”
Over the past weekend film crews have been installing various elements around the west side of “it’s a small world” at Disneyland. Coverings were placed along the entrance canal and a large blue screen was placed over most of the attraction’s facade.
When “it’s a small world” debuted at the New York World’s Fair in 1964 the exterior appeared very different than it does today at Disneyland. The now famous golden spires and Mary Blair inspired architecture facade didn’t appear as the entrance. The exterior canals were also covered with numerous angled coverings, much like the ones being installed for the filming of ‘Tomorrowland’.
Filming is expected to take place on February 4 and 5, 2014. Guests in the park should be aware that Disney will be closing several attractions and walkways during the filming. Film crews have also installed a large wall between the walkways and “it’s a small world”; the filming will be obstructed from view.
Mouseplanet has a great breakdown of which attractions and walkways will be closed and when. They include the Disneyland Railroad and Mickey and the Magical Map.
‘Tomorrowland’ is expected to be released in theaters May 22, 2015.
