Join us as we conclude our photographic look back at 2013 in the Disneyland Year in Review, September – December, 2013.
Starbucks and the Market House Remodel
The Main Street Market House reopened near the end of the summer. The Market House, themed to a turn-of-the-century general store, was closed down and expanded to facilitate the installation of the second Starbucks location at the resort. The first opened in June of 2012 on Buena Vista Street.
Disneyland, in a blog post, attempted to calm guest concerns that the charming Market House would retain its theme and quaint feelings despite the expansion and installation of the coffee giant. But when the Market House reopened it was clear the charm of the Market House had been lost.
Most of the space was now occupied by a large queue and switchback. The counter space was split into two lines and the theme was not consistent with a general store. The new appearance was more reminiscent of a country eatery. Many online criticisms compared the space to a Cracker Barrel.
Even throughout the busy Holiday season the massive queue remained mostly unused. The one bright star in the Market House remodel was the Book Rest. The area, which occupies the former front lobby of Disneyana, is a small nook filled with faux books, the potbelly stove and dark woods.
End of Summer Party – Limited Time Magic
Limited Time Magic said goodbye to the summer season with a quirky pier sideshow filled with contortionists, jugglers and character meet and greets. As strange as some of the entertainment was, The End of Summer Celebration actually seemed to breathe life into Disney California Adventure’s Paradise Pier.
Saying Goodbye to the Court of Angels
In late September guests turned out to say goodbye to one of the most beautiful corners of New Orleans Square. The Court of Angels closed on October 7 to guests. The area is slated to become the new entrance point and lobby for the exclusive, member only, Club 33.
Aside from the historical damage being done to Club 33, the damage to the Court of Angels will also be significant. No longer can guests wonder into this quite corner to take a break from busy days, no longer could a family pose for their annual photograph on the beautiful winding stairs. The closure of the Court of Angels represents the fundamental problem in Disney Parks management: Historical and thematic properties of the Disney parks no longer matters in the face of expansion for profit. The Market House was an earlier example of this issue.

The Holidays Return to the Disneyland Resort
Technically beginning in November, the Holidays returned to the Disneyland Resort with new surprises for 2013.
Cars Land and Buena Vista Street at Disney California Adventure received their overlays, as did additions to Hollywood Land. Main Street’s massive Christmas Tree returned and the beautiful “it’s a small world” Holiday dazzled guests.
New for 2013, an subtle overlay to the Jungle Cruise, known as the Jingle Cruise and a new version of World of Color called Winter Dreams.
Disneyland added a attraction overlay for the 2013 Holiday Season. The Jungle Cruise received a subtle holiday re-theming. Known as the “Jingle Cruise”, it seems those “homesick Jungle Cruise skippers” decided to bring some holiday cheer to the jungle by decorating the boat hose and boats with items sent from home. Guests found hand crafted Holiday decorations and special punchlines throughout their tours.
Also added to the Holiday line up for 2013, Disney California Adventure celebrated Latino culture with ¡Viva Navidad! Paradise Garden was filled with music dancing and food. Several times a day a street party, featuring the Three Caballeros entertained guests. The street party also featured Mickey and Minnie Mouse, dancers, Mexican folkorico and samba dancers.
¡Viva Navidad! was an instant hit with guests, and will reappear again in 2014.
In November, Disneyland made the announcement that Billy Hill and the Hillbillies would be retired from their long-time Disneyland act. The Billy Hill and the Hillbillies was an extremely popular bluegrass and comedy show which began its nearly 21 year run in 1992 outside of the Golden Horseshoe Saloon in Frontierland.
In recent years the act had been moved from the Golden Horseshoe to the Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree. The musicians, turning to their fans on their website, asked for guests to write to Disneyland management and to sign an online petition. But despite fan outcry, Disneyland stuck to their decision and the Billy Hill and the Hillbillies held their final Disneyland performance on January 6, 2014.
