On day two of the 2013 D23 Expo, Disney Imagineers Tony Baxter and Josh Shipley took to Stage 23 to present “Undiscovered Disneyland”. During the presentation, the duo showed and narrated this nearly complete ride through of the classic Disneyland attraction “Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland”. The footage is actual Technicolor film shot on and around the attraction which was located in Fronteirland where Big Thunder Mountain Railroad can be found today.
Inspired by the Disney True-Life Adventure movie series, “Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland” opened at Disneyland in 1960 and carried guests through the backside of Frontierland through 1977.

Tony Baxter can be heard throughout this footage, explaining the design, upkeep and elements of “Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland”, some of which can still be seen today. He also dispels what he calls a “debated point”, regarding where the fighting elk stags were located and why they were moved to one side of the attraction. Tony Baxter, who worked on the attraction for one summer, also provides a few ride narration quotes and shares his feelings about what he called the most beautiful part of the attraction, the Rainbow Caverns. At the end of the video, viewers are also treated to a brief view of Fort Wilderness on Tom Sawyer Island.

At the conclusion of the “Undiscovered Disneyland” presentation, Tom Staggs, Chairman, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, took to the stage in the surprise announcement that Tony Baxter would be receiving a window on Main Street U.S.A. at Disneyland.

Enjoy!
