Disneyland Live has learned that the Disneyland Park fireworks, currently the Holiday Version, “Believe…In Holiday Magic” will be canceled until further notice.
The fireworks were first suddenly canceled prior to show time on Friday, December 23rd. This morning, sources familiar with the operation of Disneyland, informed us that the fireworks would be canceled until “further notice” due to an unknown “problem backstage”. Although the exact cause of this sudden and possibly lengthily cancellation is not currently known.
Guest Relations has assured us that the snowfall effect on Main Street USA, the small world mall and around the Rivers of America will still happen nightly at the scheduled time for the fireworks show. But for now, Disneyland will only say that last night’s and tonight’s cancellations are “due to technical difficulties”.
Fireworks are currently scheduled for Disneyland’s New Years Eve celebration, one week from tonight, however it is unclear at this time if this issue will effect that show as well.
This story is currently developing and we will update this article as more information is known.
Update 12-25: According to MiceAge editor Al Lutz, two separate incidents involving the loading of fireworks occurred last week, prompting the sudden cancellation of the shows. Lutz went on to say that a show is already loaded in the launch tubes and is being held for a Christmas evening performance. After that performance it will again go dark until OSHA (Occupation Safety and Health Administration) investigates the incidents.
Update 12-29: The OC Register has confirmed that a Disney employee suffered possible ear damage after a firework prematurely detonated close to the ground. The employee was treated and released from a local hospital. OSHA was scheduled to inspect the firework’s safety this past Wednesday, however that inspection was canceled. “We have again added a third ‘World of Color’ at Disney California Adventure and a third ‘Fantasmic!’ show at Disneyland Park to provide the many guests who are visiting with multiple nighttime entertainment options,” said Suzi Brown, a Disneyland spokeswoman, in a statement to the OC Register. It remains unclear if the fireworks will be available for Disneyland New Years Eve celebration this Saturday night.
Update 12-30: While at Disneyland today, I was able to confirm with Guest Services that the fireworks would return starting tonight, weather permitting of course. This means we should get New Years Eve fireworks tomorrow night.
