Disney is teasing a “big” Disney Parks announcement surrounding the 2012 leap year. We first reported the possibility that the 2012 promotion would be called “The Year of More Magic” a few weeks ago, but it now seems evident that Disney Parks will be giving us “One More Disney Day”, which is a direct reference to Leap Day. The official announcement will take place during Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Years Eve telecast, however all indications are pointing towards the Disneyland Resort and the Walt Disney World Resort operating for a 24 hour period on Leap Day, February 29, 2012.
Disney has been teasing out the New Years Eve announcement for the past week. During the ABC broadcast of the Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade, Disney again reminded us of the upcoming announcement and sent the following message out on their official Twitter account: “Watch Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve Dec. 31 for a special announcement by
@DisneyParks #Disney24“. (link) The hashtag (the message after the # symbol), as well as the message itself is a teaser towards the announcement. #Disney24 is a reference to the parks staying open for a 24 hour period. This will not be the first time Disneyland Park has been open for such a long period of time. In January of 1987, Disneyland was open for a 60 hour period during the launch of the original Star Tours attraction.
Disney Parks has also launched a web site for the promotion, although currently housing only a teaser video. The video begins with Walt Disney’s famous Disneyland opening day speech, “To all who come to this happy place, welcome”. It then goes on to show just about every clock that can be found in the park running in fast time lapse as the phrases, “More Magic…More Memories…More Time…More Details 12/31/11″ flash across the screen.
The exact nature of promotion remains speculation, and we will know much more on New Years Eve as the announcement is made during Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Years Eve.
