California Adventure has reached yet another milestone in the “1 billion dollar makeover”. The new entrance has not only been unveiled, but, as of today, it is in operation. The new Pan Pacific Auditorium inspired entrance is a beautiful addition to the park’s new theme. The art deco architecture of the 1930’s will complement the time specific Los Angeles Buena Vista Street that will appear behind it some time next year. Right now it’s tough to see with the Golden Gate monorail bridge still visible in the background, but time is drawing short on DCA 1.0 and the old gate will be nothing but a memory as guests will soon be routed behind Soarin’ Over California as Buena Vista Street is constructed on the remains of the Sunshine Plaza.
I went to the park today to capture these images and share them with you. I was excited to enter California Adventure though the new gates and I have a feeling the DCA is finally coming of age.
The entry is vast and wide; it is very inviting.
The art deco architecture extends to the gates themselves…
…As well as the signage
The accessibility gates are much larger than the ones on the old entry. This is a much needed feature for double wide and jogging strollers, who before, needed to to have the large side gates unlocked.
The fake flags are a bit underwhelming, but they do match the marquee well.
A few weeks ago I drove out to the actual site where the Pan Pacific Auditorium once stood. The auditorium was destroyed by fire in the 1980’s and a park is now in the place.
A replica of one of the spires sits at the park entry.
THE HISTORY BEHIND CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE’S NEW ENTRANCE
Disney California Adventure Park is going through an extensive refurbishment and reconstruction. As part of the reconstruction, California Adventure will receive a new entrance. The old entrance featured large tile murals, 15 foot high concrete letters spelling out CALIFORNIA, as well as a very lackluster ‘gate’. The actual entrance consisted of little more than a green gate with a faux cooper roof. The entrance was very plain and uninspired, exactly the opposite of how you would expect a Disney park to greet it’s guests.
Thankfully, along with new attractions and buildings, the new California Adventure will receive a proper entrance. The new area that will greet guests will be named Buena Vista Street. Similar to what Main Street USA is to Disneyland, Buena Vista Street will be a replica of 1930′s Los Angeles; the time frame that Walt Disney arrived in Los Angeles to start his career as an animator. This area will be very elaborate and up to the standards of Disney. At the time of the writing of this article, this area is still the old plain buildings of Sunshine Plaza, however, the concept art is already exciting Disney park fans as well as the construction that is now visible in the area.
